Bates building depth at LB

There are four fifth-year seniors expected to start for Northwestern when it opens the season at Vanderbilt. Two of those players -- Quentin Davie and Nate Williams -- will strap on the pads and take the field in the middle of the Wildcats' defense, making linebacker the team's most experienced position group.

Even though Davie and Williams haven't practiced much this spring, coach Pat Fitzgerald called his backers the most accomplished group on his squad through the team's first 14 practices. And without Davie and Williams, linebackers coach Randy Bates has gotten to see his young wave of up-and-comers.
