Cornerbacks battling to replace McManis

Northwestern opens spring practice next Monday and one of the hottest position battles to watch over the next four weeks will be at the right cornerback position manned by standout Sherrick McManis for the last three seasons.

It's difficult to replace an All-Big Ten player like McManis. Last season Northwestern's lockdown cover man led the team in interceptions (5), passes broken up (7) and passes defensed (12) and often made the big play that swung a game in the Wildcats' favor.

But defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz knows that the Wildcats have to replace more than McManis' production on the field. They also have to replace his leadership.
