Mackey talking Mississippi State
It's been a long and winding road for Leon Mackey to reach Division-I football.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end his signed with both Virginia Tech and South Carolina and is now going through the recruiting process once more while preparing for his sophomore year at Hinds (Miss.) Community College.
Mackey signed with the Hokies as a three-star prospect in 2008 and with the Gamecocks in 2009 as a four-star recruit out of Hargrave Military Academy. After failing to be cleared by the NCAA last fall, Mackey made his way south to Hinds and is now going the junior college route to attain his ultimate goal.
"I feel like everything happens for a reason," Mackey said. "The last trip when I thought I was getting to college there was a big confusion. It wasn't because I wasn't qualified, it was just some miscommunication with the clearinghouse. It's been a long process but it taught me to be patient and that everything happens for a reason."
Having gone through recruiting two previous times has taught Mackey plenty about the process. This time he is getting straight down to business.
"I understand what to say when I talk to coaches and what they say to me," Mackey said. "I want to get straight to the point in what I am trying to do. I'm looking to see if I'm the football player that they need and see if they are the team where I can fit into their scheme."
Mackey has already received offers from Mississippi State, Texas Tech and South Carolina. But he admits he is not concentrating much on his recruitment at the moment.
