Spring position preview: Tiger tailbacks

Missouri will open spring football in less than a month. Between now and then, PowerMizzou.com will take a look at every position on the roster headed into spring drills. We look today at the tailback spot:

The Starter: Derrick Washington held the job the last two years and will do so again as a senior. Washington has run for 1,839 yards and 27 touchdowns the last two seasons. Throughout last year, many Tiger fans questioned whether he was the top option and, more specifically, whether he had lost a step. But Washington carried the load against Kansas with 111-yard day, including the run that set up the game-winning field goal. There is no doubt he will be the main man in the running game again.

The Backup Competition: De'Vion Moore has shown flashes, but has also battled injuries in two years. Kendial Lawrence got his feet wet as a true freshman with 216 yards on 51 carries (numbers better than Washington had as a freshman and comparable to Moore). The Tigers will bring in three freshmen in the fall, but Moore and Lawrence will add spring ball to the experience edge they already have over the youngsters.
