Johnson notes Vols' ties, eyes options
Hutchinson Community College and Georgia native Toby Johnson knows plenty about the Vols and has plenty of ties to Tennessee.
In addition to former Hutchinson coach Brandon Staley being on the Vol staff, Johnson also knows Vols signee Cordarrelle Patterson and frequently visits with Vol assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Darin Hinshaw.
"I talk to coach Hinshaw a lot," Johnson said. "He was actually by the school last week to check on me. I know a lot of people at Tennessee, which is good."
In addition to the Vols, Johnson, who unofficially visited Tennessee during his spring break, hopes to see a few more places as well as his calendar opens up at semester's end.
"I do want to take some visits this summer," Johnson said. "We only have one bye week so visits in the fall will be hard. I hope to get down to see Ole Miss in a couple of weeks and I would like to go see USC. Coach O (Ed Orgeron) was by the school here a couple of weeks ago."
Missouri and Oklahoma are the latest to offer the 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman and Johnson said at this point, he is keeping all of his options open and is trying to figure out when he will be able to take visits.
"It's going to be kind of tough with only the one open date in the fall and with summer school here at Hutchinson. Any summertime trips will have to be on the weekends and maybe official visits," Johnson offered. "I don't know yet."
While trips for Johnson might be challenging, trips for coaches to Hutchinson, Kansas, this spring have been commonplace.
