January 23, 2009Phoenix (Ariz.) five-star defensive end Devon Kennard is ready announce his college decision.
With Cal, Texas and USC has his final choices, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Army All-American will announce his commitment among friends and family Tuesday at Desert Vista High School.
"I turned down the ESPN deal," said Kennard. "It's my day, and I don't care about all of that. I've never been one of those hoo-rah guys trying to get TV time. It's nice to be on TV, but I don't want to be on a schedule because that's what ESPN wants.
"Like I said, it's my day and I want to be around my family and my teammates. I want to be with those seniors who were with me for so long. I'll have my shirt to the school I'll pick and I'll be proud of my decision."
That decision will be made public Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m. during a school assembly.
"Man, I'm just glad to get this thing kicked off," said Kennard. "It's been a long road, but I'm ready to make my commitment and move forward. It will be Texas, USC or Cal."
Kennard has unofficially and officially visited each of his final three choices. Camping at USC over the summer, Kennard traveled to El Paso to watch the Texas Longhorns play the UTEP Minors Sep. 6.
He then followed up that trip with an unofficial visit to USC in September for the Trojans, Buckeyes showdown at the Coliseum.
Rated as the nation's No. 1 defensive end prospect, Kennard entertained more than 40 scholarship offers after posting 24.5 sacks his junior year. Tearing his ACL while playing running back in 2008, Kennard has his sights set on an April recovery date.
"This injury has made me appreciate everything I have and everything I'm capable of," said Kennard. "Despite what's happened, I still get to go out and play for any university in America. Hopefully by mid-March, or the first week of April I'll be 100-percent."
