July 17, 2008This Friday, at the Bell Hill Griffin Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida the lights will be turned on at the Swamp for one of the country's top summer camps, Friday Night Lights. Introduced four years ago by football coach Urban Meyer, this particular camp has turned into a big hit for his program.
"Our goal was to have a unique camp that showcases a game-like atmosphere in the Swamp and to attract the top players in America," said Meyer. "It has been a great success."
Headlining this Friday Night Lights camp are Class of 2009 standouts like quarterbacks Morgan Newton (Carmel, Ind.), Eugene Smith (Miramar, Fla.) and Denard Robinson, running backs Trent Richardson (Pensacola, Fla.), Mike Gillislee (DeLand, Fla.), and Dontae Aycock (Tampa, Fla.), wide receivers Jheranie Boyd (Ashbrook, N.C.), Chad Bumphis (Tupleo, Miss.), Kendall Kelly (Gadsden, Ala.), Xavier Reese (Oakland Park, Fla.), Jamal Reid (Mayo, Fla.), Nu'Keese Richardson (Pahokee, Fla.), Greg Reid (Valdosta, Ga.) and Rantavious Wooten (Belle Glade, Fla.), tight ends Desmond Parks (Greer, S.C.) and Mason Johnston (Jacksonville, Fla.), offensive linemen Nick Alajajian (Naples, Fla.), Johnnie Farms (Perry, Ga,), Jon Halapio (St. Petersburg, Fla.), and Daniel Hood (Knoxville, Tenn.), defensive linemen Gary Brown (Quincy, Fla.), Curtis Porter (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ryne Giddins (Seffner, Fla.), linebackers Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla.), Nigel Mitchell-Thornton (Stone Mountain, Ga.), and Larvez Mars (Apopka, Fla.) and defensive backs Dre Kirkpatrick (Gadsden, Ala.), Jawanza Starling (Tallahassee, Fla.), Prince Kent (Norcross, Ga.) and Travis Hawkins (Gaithersburg, Md.).
Richardson, Boyd, Kelly, Alajajian, Brown, Giddens, Bostic, and Kirkpatrick are all members of the Rivals100 while Smith, Newton, Gillislee, Richardson, Wooten, Farms, Mars, Starling, and Kent are included in the Rivals250.
It is expected that close to 200 prospects will be in attendance and there will likely be more rising juniors than seniors. Last year, 168 prospects participated in Friday Night Lights.
There are some standouts from the Class of 2010 that are expected on Friday night; quarterbacks Jake Heaps (Issaquah, Wa.) and Trey Burton (Venice, Fla.), running back Eduardo Clements (Miami, Fla.), wide receivers Ted Meline (Davie, Fla.), Chris Dunkley (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), and Kadron Boone (Ocala, Fla.), offensive lineman Ian Silberman (Orange Park, Fla.), cornerback Lo Wood (Apopka, Fla.), and safeties Gideon Ajagbe (Belle Glade, Fla.) and Marvin Robinson (Eagle Lake, Fla.).
Meyer ran similar camps while he was the head coach at both Bowling Green and Utah.
