January 18, 2002The rumors that the 2002 recruiting class could include at least one greyshirt have been confirmed.
Coach Barry Alvarez told rush end Joe Monty during an in-home visit Thursday night he will be greyshirted. Monty has known for months that would likely be the plan.
"They want me to get bigger and stronger without putting stress on my body in practice," Monty said. "They don't want me to beat up my shoulders and neck."
Monty is 6-2, 235 and runs a 4.8 40, but the UW staff feels he needs to get stronger to be a pass rush threat in the Big Ten.
The younger brother of former Badger captain Pete Monty said he knew when the Badgers offered him a scholarship in late October, that's exactly where he would go.
"It's Camp Randall, the Big Ten, you can't get any better than that in college football," Monty said."
- Last night, Defensive Coordinator Kevin Cosgrove visited Reggie Cribbs' house again, as all of the Badger commits are receiving additional in-home visits prior to Signing Day. Look for more on Monty and Cribbs in the next print edition of IW.
- I spoke with Levonne Rowan's father last night, and he has not yet made a decision. It is reportedly very close between Wisconsin and Iowa, and the final decision will likely be made next week.
