January 5, 2008Arizona State landed a commitment from its highest profile recruit moments ago when Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton star Gerell Robinson selected the Sun Devils over his other finalist, Notre Dame, on live national television during halftime the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on NBC.
Multiple sources have informed ASUDevils.com that until Robinson made his announcement during the television broadcast, he had not informed either Arizona State or Notre Dame of his intentions.
Robinson is No. 52 overall prospect in the 2008 recruiting class, the No. 8 athlete and No. 1 recruit in the state of Arizona by Rivals.com.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder is projected to play wide receiver at ASU, but is a talented athlete capable of playing multiple spots on both sides of the field, and he is lining up at safety for the West squad in today's Army Game.
Robinson had a circuitous recruiting journey prior to this commitment. He originally pledged the University of Arizona as a quarterback prospect in November of 2006, while still finishing his junior season. Then, in September of this year, he de-committed from the school, citing his desire to play wide receiver in college.
After re-opening the recruiting process, Robinson took several official visits, focusing his attention on ASU, Notre Dame and Oregon. Less than one month ago he said Oregon was leading for his services. Then he surprisingly dropped the Ducks from consideration while in San Antonio preparing for the Army Game, trimming his list to just two.
Robinson had 26 catches for 524 yards and nine receiving touchdowns as a senior for the 12-1 Huskies. He also rushed for 543 yards and four touchdowns on 65 carries and completed 47-of-80 passing attempts for 843 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions.
The Sun Devils now have commitments from seven of the state's top 15 prospects in the class, including the No. 2 recruit, Jarrell Barbour, who like Robinson switched his pledge to ASU after an earlier commitment to Arizona.
