Prognostications are still being processed for both the soccer and volleyball seasons - which begin in two weeks - but UCLA and California are shaping up to be the favorites in women's soccer while Washington looks to be the odds-on favorite when the Pac-10 coaches polls are officially announced. The CSTV/AVCA preseason volleyball poll was released and six Pac-10 teams made the top 25.
Meanwhile at NCAA HQ, the NCAA is reconsidering a transfer rule change which would allow a student athlete who has graduated with eligibility remaining to attend graduate school at a different institution and be immediately eligible.
Projected starting junior linebacker Andy Darkins is out for the year with a biceps injury. JC transfer linebacker Danzel Issac and defensive lineman Keith Robertson are academically ineligible. Receivers Marcel Love and Anthony Crosby have been suspended indefinitely for breaking team rules.
JC transfer defensive lineman Martin Tevaseu suffered a knee injury and is expected to be out anywhere between two weeks and two months, depending on the severity. Sophomore linebacker Adam Vincent has left the program.
Sophomore linebacker John Hale and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jess Ward are suspended for the Bruins' season opener against Utah as a result of their involvement in a fight at Ward's parent's house earlier in the year.
The Cougars added a late recruit to the 2006 lineup in offensive lineman Chris Bush, who is expected to redshirt this season. Tight end Jason Price is fighting an eligibility issue and is not with the team. WSU's home game against Idaho on September 9 was changed to 12:45 p.m. start time and will be televised by Fox Sports.
Freshman soccer recruits Jamie Abrahamson and Allison Fisher will sit out a portion of the year while they recuperate from injuries.
Returning redshirt senior setter Gwen Davis has left the volleyball team due to recurring injuries.
Defensive back Devin Mays and receiver Antwuan Harris are not academically eligible.
Senior offensive lineman Tim Mattran suffered a stress fracture in his left leg and may not be available for the season opener against Oregon. Sophomore defensive lineman Pannel Egboh is still recuperating from a broken leg and was unable to start fall camp while redshirt freshman linebacker Tom McAndrew sustained a foot injury and is likely out for the season. Junior tight end Michael Horgan has left the team but speedy defensive back Wopamo Osaisai rejoined the team after taking a year off to focus on track.
Senior projected starting running back Kenny James suffered a broken arm and will be out for three weeks. Washington received a verbal commitment from offensive lineman Scott Shugert. Shugert selected Washington over Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and Idaho.
Junior projected starting defensive lineman Lawrence Jackson did not practice last week due to a groin strain while junior projected starting running back Chauncey Washington is out nursing a sore left hammy.
California was ranked 17th in the CSTV/AVCA preseason volleyball poll.
Senior defensive lineman Rickey Parker and sophomore defensive back Gerald Rodriguez have left the team.
