June 26, 2006Milledgeville (Ga.) Baldwin running back Darius Marshall was one of the most productive running backs in the Peach State in 2005, rushing for 2,300 yards and 30 touchdowns. He currently has four scholarship offers to his credit, and would like to see that number increase.
"I have offers from Florida, Michigan State, Maryland and Indiana," the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Marshall said. "I also like South Carolina and Auburn a lot."
Marshall, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, took an unofficial visit to Florida in the spring and liked what he found.
"Florida has a good atmosphere," he said. "I just like how their coaches love their players and let them still have a lot of fun. They have a winning tradition down there. Coach (John) Hevesy stays in touch with a good bit, and I've gotten text messages from Urban Meyer."
Marshall, who bench presses 295 pounds, also thinks highly of Michigan State and Maryland.
"Coach (Ben) Sirmans at Michigan State is a great guy, and he makes me feel like I could depend on him if I went to school there. I feel like Maryland is a school on the rise, and it seems like they have nice facilities. I'd have a good chance to play in bowl games if I went there."
Marshall plans a trip to Columbia next month to get a look at the South Carolina Gamecocks.
"Coach (Robert) Gillespie is a good guy and a good running back coach. They're kind of wide open at the running back spot, and I think I could come in and help them out. I think it would be a good fit for me playing in their offense. I'm going to visit them at the end of next month."
Marshall will pick his college based on three primary factors.
"Tradition, academics and atmosphere are the main things for me. I'd like to commit sometime before the end of the summer. South Carolina and Auburn are my top two schools as of today."
