September 7, 2004Miami (Fla.) Carol City safety Kenneth Phillips is one of the nation's most sought after players. He is also one of the nation's most elusive to catch up with and one of the most media shy. Then again, he wouldn't have it any other way.
"I have talked to Duke, Tennessee, Florida and Miami so far and that's it," Phillips said. "I have not heard from Florida State or LSU yet, but that is cool because they can call once a week and they are probably waiting until the end of each week."
Phillips doesn't mind the lack of calls, in fact, he is happy with it. Phillips wanted to narrow his list down early so he wouldn't be bombarded with calls once the season began. His top four schools consist of Miami, Florida State, Florida and LSU.
"I narrowed my list to four schools and gave them my phone number and that's about it," Phillips said. "I don't know how Duke and Tennessee got my number and I didn't mind talking to them at all, I just thanked them for calling and talking to me, but I told them I wasn't interested and that I had it narrowed down to four schools.
This is why I wanted to narrow it down to four schools. I just wanted to be able to focus on my senior season and my school work and not let things get too crazy. I don't like being flashy or getting a lot of attention. I just try to stay humble and do my thing."
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Phillips is the nation's No. 4 player overall and the consensus No. 1 safety in the country.
"We didn't get much from the hurricane other than rain," Phillips said. "Our game this past Friday got cancelled and the one we play this week got moved from Friday to Saturday. I'm glad that it got moved, because now I can go to the Miami-Florida State game like I had originally planned on doing."
