The numbers aren't spectacular.
Yes, the White team, made up mostly of second and third team players, defeated the Orange team 27-9 yesterday in Virginia Tech's spring game. But 13 of those 27 points came before the clock even started.
Coach Frank Beamer might second-guess himself for giving the White team those 13 points to start, but he's got other things to worry about. Quarterback Logan Thomas threw three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns and the trio of Trey Edmunds, Michael Holmes and J.C. Coleman rushed for just 34 yards. Still Beamer isn't reading too much into the numbers.
"I can tell you there's more to our offense than we showed today, but we're also sorta out trying to get a good foundation and I think we've done that," he said. "I thought that the more running plays popped for more yardage today. It's gonna be more interesting to go back and look at this video and see who did what and how they did it. But we've gotta function as a whole."
Beamer also wasn't about to call out Thomas, who did complete 16 of 29 passes for 214 yards, though he was also sacked three times.
"I thought the first one was (Der'Woun Greene and Greene's had a great spring," Beamer said. "He's really impressed me with his toughness and I think he made a great break on the ball. Usually, you can always go back and it's not the right throw or not the right route, but we'll take a look at that on the film."
Yesterday's spring game isn't the best indication of the team the Hokies will field in the season-opener against Alabama Aug. 31. But it does show plenty of flaws that will have to be addressed and corrected over the summer and into fall camp and Beamer knows it.
"The team that we were today, it's not so important where we are today, it's important where we can get to before we go up against Alabama," he said. "That means a whole summer of working and getting stronger in conditioning, catching balls. We don't have to be the same group that lines up against Alabama that we were today."
