Doug E. Fresh Performance Highlights Georgetown Basketball Midnight Madness
WASHINGTON - Highlighted by an incredible performance from hip hop legend Doug E. Fresh and introductions of the Georgetown men's and women's basketball team, a packed crowd was at McDonough Arena on Friday night as Midnight Madness tipped off the start 2012-13 college basketball season.
Georgetown's Midnight Madness celebration was broadcast by ESPNU, with former college basketball coach Tim Welsh on hand to interview Head Men's Basketball Coach John Thompson III, sophomore men's basketball player Otto Porter (Sikeston, Mo./Scott County Central) and Head Women's Basketball Coach Keith Brown.
The night also featured the debut of Georgetown's mascot-in-training, Jack, Jr. The 10-month old puppy attended his first Midnight Madness.
Students started lining up for access to the inner lot - where activities included the Domino's Pizza pop-a-shot, the Powerade ball toss as well as a cookout - early in the afternoon.
Doors to McDonough Arena opened at 8 p.m. and after performances from the GU Step Team, GU Jawani and Groove Theory, the women's basketball team was introduced and then public address announcer Chris Paul introduced Doug E. Fresh.
The performance from Doug E. Fresh was incredible as he had the crowd on its feet for nearly 30 minutes, closing his set out with The Dougie.
Team introductions for the men's team came next and Doug E. Fresh introduced Thompson.
Held with the theme of "Kickin' it Ol' Skool," the men's basketball team's three classes (there are no seniors), then picked songs from each one of the years the Hoyas have reached the Final Four - 1982, 1984, 1985 and 2007 - and danced to those songs, with the crowd picking the favorite.
The evening concluded with a dunk contest from the men's basketball team.
