September 15, 2012NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt leads Presbyterian 27-0 after one half of play at Vanderbilt Stadium.
The Commodore ground game that has struggled the first two weeks has come around against the Blue Hose, led by the running of senior back Zac Stacy.
On his very first carry of the game, Stacy found a hole and went untouched for a school-record 86-yard touchdown run. The Alabama native followed on his next carry a series later with 35 yards. Stacy has rushed for 140 yards on four carries.
The Commodores have rushed for 234 yards on 19 carries. Junior reserve back Wesley Tate scored from 6-yards out in the second quarter to give the offense its second touchdown.
Junior Austyn Carta-Samuels got the start for the Commodores at quarterback, his first collegiate start since November 20, 2010 when he led the Wyoming Cowboys to a 44-0 win over Colorado State.
The 2009 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year has completed 5-of-9 passes for 63 yards. His favorite target has been sophomore receiver Chris Boyd with three receptions for 52 yards.
The Vanderbilt defense has seen multiple looks from the Presbyterian offense including a bit of a Wing-T look within its spread attack.
Presbyterian threatened to score during the closing minutes of the half after a holding call was called on a punt attempt, nullifying a block by Caleb Azubike at midfield.
The Blue Hose quickly drove to the Commodores five-yard line, but senior corner Trey Wilson stepped in front of a Tamyn Garrick pass in the end zone and returned it for a 100-yard touchdown.
It marked the third interception return for a touchdown by Wilson during his career, a Commodore career record.
Vanderbilt compiled 297 yards of total offense to Presbyterian's 127. The Commodores have converted on all three trips to the red zone. However, the offense continues to struggle with converting its appearances into touchdowns, going just 1-of-3 against the Blue Hose so far.
