December 30, 2011MORE 5-STARS: Nkemdiche | Fuller | Foster | Tyner | Tunsil | Burrows | Bigelow | Browne
They are the best of the best. The players that are wanted by every program and destined to make a big impact at the college level and beyond.
Rivals.com has identified the first five-star prospects for the 2013 class and is unveiling them this week. Ten prospects have been awarded five-stars but are not ranked at this time and we will profile two each day. The next player to receive the five-star spotlight is Whitewright (Texas) High quarterback Tyrone Swoopes.
Tyrone Swoopes, DQB, Whitewright (Texas) High
Attributes: 6-5, 220 pounds, 4.59 40
Scouting report: Swoopes is a very dynamic dual-threat quarterback. He is a long strider that has deceptive speed in the open field. He has very good vision and is able to gain extra yards out of almost every run. As a passer he has an incredibly strong arm and is very comfortable throwing outside the pocket. He is more of a running threat at this point but the tools are all there for him to be a top-flight college passer. Coming from a very small school he will need some coaching as a quarterback but his upside is through the roof.
Analyst's take: "Swoopes may not be the most polished all-around quarterback at the moment but there is no denying his skillset. A big kid, he can run very well and is hard for defenders to bring down. He rarely goes down after the first contact and seems to have a knack for making plays when nothing seems to be there. He showed that big-play ability when he rushed for 540 yards and seven touchdowns in a single game this year. He has some work to do as a thrower since Whitewright does not really ask him to pass much but, when he does throw, his arm strength is apparent. He has a chance to be a very special college player." - Brian Perroni, Southwest Analyst, Rivals.com
Why he's a five-star: "Everyone is looking for the next Cam Newton, Terrelle Pryor, Robert Griffin III - a big quarterback who can kill you with his arm, feet or the combination of the two and Swoopes is that guy. He's very raw as a passer, but the same can be said for guys like Vince Young, Newton and Pryor out of high school when they were five stars. The bottom line is that his athleticism is off the charts, he is very hard to stop even without being an accomplished passer and when he learns some of the intricacies of the position, he could be a home run. It's hard to find any one player in the 2013 class with a higher ceiling athletically." - Mike Farrell, National Analyst, Rivals.com
His coach says: "I think everybody knows what type of player he is and all about how special of an athlete he is. What they don't know is how great a kid he is. He's the type of kid of you would want to date your daughter. He makes all A's and is really active in church. He's just a special young man. He has the potential to do a lot of great things, both on the field and off." - Jake Wylie, Whitewright (Texas) High head coach
Odds and Ends: Swoopes finished his junior season with 2,267 yards and 29 touchdowns rushing in only 10 games, averaging over 13 yards-per-carry. Those numbers don't seem to be a fluke either as he averaged over 12 yards-per-run as a sophomore?.He rushed for a national single-game high of 540 yards against Tom Bean (Texas) High this season? He threw for three touchdowns three times this season, including in a perfect 10-for-10 performance against Bells (Texas) High?.Though Swoopes comes from a school that most high school football fans in the state of Texas have never heard of, teammate Gerren Ballard has committed to TCU for the class of 2012. That could help the Horned Frogs in possibly snagging Swoopes next year as well.
