January 4, 2010Has Rennie Curran made up his mind whether to stay at Georgia for his senior season or apply for the NFL Draft?
It appears a decision has possibly been made.
Late Sunday, a source close to the Bulldog program told UGASports that both Curran and free safety Reshad Jones have decided to apply for the NFL Draft, and will do so by the league's mandated deadline of Jan. 15.
Jones could not immediately be reached for comment, but in a text message to UGASports, Curran indicated that could be the case.
"I will be meeting with Coach (Mark) Richt pretty soon to discuss my final decision and we will go from there," Curran said.
Curran is a member of the AP All-SEC team, Curran was a finalists for the Lombardi Award and one of 16 finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award after leading the SEC with 122 tackles last fall.
Both Curran and Jones had indicated that they would wait until the Bulldog hire a new defensive coordinator, but Richt said last week that he still wasn't certain how long his search would last.
ESPN Draft expert Mel Kiper rates Curran as the third-ranked junior outside linebacker available in the 2010 draft.
Fortunately for Georgia, there is depth available at linebacker next fall.
Akeem Dent and Darryl Gamble will both return for their senior year, while rising junior Marcus Dowtin is expected to establish himself as a force for the Bulldogs next fall. Nick Williams is also a rising junior expected to play a key role, as will sophomores Mike Gilliard and Christian Robinson along with Chase Vasser, who will be a redshirt freshman.
