Each week, we'll look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing. This week, we're spotlighting either single-season or career NCAA records.
1. Give him six - again. Central Michigan QB Dan LeFevour threw two TD passes in the Chippewas' victory over Ohio in the MAC championship game, setting an NCAA major-college record for touchdown responsibility with 148. He had been tied with former Hawaii QB Colt Brennan (2005-07) and former Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell (2005-08). LeFevour has thrown 101 TD passes, run for 46 touchdowns and caught one touchdown pass. LeFevour's record may not last long, though. Houston QB Case Keenum has been responsible for 121 TDs, and he has one game remaining this season and all of next season to get 28 more.
2. What's the catch? Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes has 138 receptions this season, five shy of breaking the major-college single-season record set by Houston's Manny Hazard in 1989. Barnes and the Falcons meet Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl on Dec. 30. Idaho's pass defense is awful, so unless Barnes is hurt early, he will set the record.
3. Many happy returns. Alabama's Javier Arenas went into the SEC championship game needing 36 yards to set the major-college record for career punt return yards; he still needs 28. The record is 1,761 yards by former Texas Tech star Wes Welker (2000-03). Texas has struggled in punt coverage this season, giving up 10.8 yards per return on 22 returns.
4. A little bit short. Tennessee SS Eric Berry has 494 career interception return yards. The major-college record is 501, by former Florida State CB Terrell Buckley (1989-91). The Vols meet Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-a Bowl on Dec. 31. Hokies QB Tyrod Taylor has thrown four interceptions this season; one of those was to a strong safety (Georgia Tech's Morgan Burnett).
