Butler talks corner competition
Junior cornerback Mario Butler is a major piece of the defensive puzzle for the Georgia Tech football team this fall. Butler along with Rashaad Reid and Jerrard Tarrant are the top three corners on the team going into the fall. They are battling each other for the top two spots and Jacketsonline caught up with Reid to see how he is fitting into the puzzle.
How is camp going?
"I think things are going pretty well. I am just out here trying to get things going and I am taking things one day at a time. That is the biggest thing when you are going through camp."
Do you feel like either yourself, Reid or Tarrant could start?
"We want to get to the point where everybody can start. That is what coach Charles Kelly tells us to focus on. He wants everybody just competing everyday trying to do our jobs and rack up our bonus points to see who will start. Everyday the main thing is just competing."
How much has Tarrant's presence pushed you and Reid in camp?
"It is good competition and everyone is shining out here. We are trying to prove we are worthy of the starting position. I have started 13 games and Reid has started eight games last year, but that does not mean anything because this is a new year. I am happy Tarrant is here and part of the team because he is a great player and he pushes everybody."
What did you work on over the summer and what do you still focus on working on?
"I need to be more physical at cornerback. I need to just be one of the guys. I know I am pretty good at covering, but I want to be more of an all-around cornerback who can dominate the game and come up and make the big hits and tackles. That is a big emphasis for me. In the spring, I got to be more physical and this year I want to take that to the next level."
What are your thoughts on Rod Sweeting?
"I think Rod is going to be a player. He has great ball skills and good instincts. He is just learning the playbook and is coming along. He will be alright and I think he will be pretty good for us."
What it is like covering Stephen Hill?
"Stephen is a good receiver and I knew a little about him before he came here. Coming in here as a freshman, he is not scared to go against anyone and that is a good thing. He has really strong hands and that was the biggest surprise to me."
How much do you weigh right now?
"I am at 186 pounds and I want to be between that and 190 pounds."
