MacMillan ready for the next step
After spending the past year away from home at prep school in New Jersey, offensive lineman Nolan MacMillan is ready for the next step. That will take the 6-foot-6, 293-pound MacMillan to the University of Iowa where he will start classes in early June. We caught up with the Toronto native to talk about the transition to college, what he expects his freshman year, a recent visit to Iowa City, and much more.
Q: When are you planning to head out to Iowa?
MacMillan: I'm going to arrive there on June 3.
Q: Did you want to get there right away basically?
MacMillan: Yeah. I'm going to be taking a class and I wanted to get there as soon as possible to work out with the team and learn my way around campus, so I'll be more comfortable come September.
Q: You were at Iowa's scrimmage in April, right?
MacMillan: Yes, I was.
Q: Were you just out there for the day or the whole weekend?
MacMillan: I was there for the weekend. I was at practice the day before and I went to a team meeting and a couple of offensive line meetings with Coach Morgan. Both of my parents were able to make it down too. Just my dad came on my official visit before, so my mom got to see the campus and everything. It was nice to be able to enjoy that with them and also just see them because I hadn't seen them for a while. It was a good weekend.
Q: You probably saw Iowa practice during bowl prep on your official visit, but was it different watching them this spring now that you're getting ready to join the team?
MacMillan: Yeah, it was a little bit different in that sense, definitely. I guess I felt more involved in the practice even though I was just watching. I was more into it and more excited by what was going on around me really.
Q: What did you think after following the offensive linemen around to their meetings and practice and everything?
MacMillan: It sounds like a good unit. They've got a lot of leadership from the upperclassmen. Those guys are very good players, but they're also willing to help out the younger guys. Everybody seemed really friendly and everybody seemed like they want to be the best team that they can be, so I think it was definitely a good team atmosphere.
