Manning ready to compete
The last time redshirt freshman linebacker Terrell Manning hit someone in a football game, the end result was not pretty. Manning was a senior at Scotland County High School in Laurinburg, N.C., and they were playing in the 2007 state playoffs against East Burke High School.
On this play something went wrong. Manning did not get up off the turf, and his knee was in pain. An MRI would later reveal he had torn his anterior cruciate ligament. His high school playing days were over, and his NC State career was dealt a setback before he even arrived on campus. The heralded recruit, considered by some to be the top ranked prospect in North Carolina's 2008 class, would need reconstructive knee surgery.
The rehab time on such a procedure meant that Manning was not going to see the field for the Pack in 2008. In fact, it was almost a full year from that fateful East Burke game when Manning donned the pads again and made some contact. He was cleared to practice for NC State's bowl game against Rutgers in December.
