QB questions loom for Pitt again
In a season with numerous recurring themes (and most of them not necessarily positive), Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt found himself harkening back to September when discussing his quarterbacks during his weekly press conference this week.
"I probably won't name a starter until Saturday," Wannstedt said on Monday, sounding a lot like he had two months earlier.
In late September, Wannstedt found himself deciding between redshirt freshman Kevan Smith and true freshman Pat Bostick. Through three starts, Smith (who filled in for injured junior Bill Stull, who opened the season as the Panthers' starter) completed 27 of 49 passes for 316 yards, 1 touchdown, and 4 interceptions. After opening the Connecticut game with 3-of-9 passing for 29 yards and an interception in two quarters, Smith was pulled for Bostick.
The following week, Wannstedt opted to start the true freshman at Virginia, and he has started each of the six games since. In that span, Bostick completed 94 of 154 passes (61%) for 905 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. But in his last start, Pitt's 20-16 loss at Rutgers on Saturday, Bostick completed just 3-of-10 for 35 yards in the first half, and he was replaced by Smith for the third quarter.
