Notes on a scorecard: Trojans edge Arizona
One thought stood at the front of Joe McKnight's mind: "Catch the ball."
The true freshman has not had many chances this season, and, in limited work, the tailback had averaged a fumble every eight carries.
So, when the punt fell into his hands at USC's 30-yard line, McKnight paused. He grasped the ball firmly, and then took off. The speed, the moves, everything everyone had heard about the athletic sensation out of Louisiana was flashing before the Coliseum crowd. McKnight dazzled his way to the Arizona 25-yard line, to cap a 45-yard return.
"Since I got here, I really haven't proven to people what I can do," McKnight said, echoing his refrain from the Washington State game three weeks earlier, when he reeled off a few impressive garbage-time carries. "I hope I proved to the seniors that I can play with them."
