UNC looking to score in Palmetto State
North Carolina's football program under Butch Davis is looking to make its presence felt in the state of South Carolina, where there is typically a small number of fast and skilled gridiron prospects every year. The current UNC roster has just three players from the Palmetto State; redshirt freshman tight end B.J. Phillips (Columbia), junior wide receiver Brooks Foster (Boiling Springs), and junior offensive lineman Bryon Bishop (Union), a number that surprises the first-year Tar Heel skipper.
"To have only three (from South Carolina) is probably a little bit surprising," said Davis. "If I would have put a lot of thought into it, you would think that conceivably there would be more players from the immediate surrounding areas. I know during North Carolina's heyday, when Mack Brown was here, they would traditionally get a significant amount of kids from the Virginia Beach area, and from South Carolina. You would think anytime that you're recruiting where parents have an opportunity to drive and come watch their sons play, within three, four, five, six hours, it gives you a legitimate shot to recruit players."
