Wolfpack to miss Baker's presence
When North Carolina State running back Toney Baker found out his season was over, he joked that coach Tom O'Brien would have him for one more year.
Baker, a third-year junior, caught a short pass from quarterback Harrison Beck and started juking and jiving his way for 17 yards at the 11:34 mark in the fourth quarter Saturday against Central Florida. Nothing on the play showed anything scary looking, but the exploratory surgery did find something.
Baker underwent arthroscopic surgery Sunday morning, and Dr. Michael Fajgenbaum discovered cartilage damage. Baker will undergo reconstructive surgery at a future date.
Baker is expected to receive a medical redshirt in the future.
"It's a devastating blow for our football team," O'Brien said. "We've lost two very good football players in [tight end] Anthony Hill and Toney Baker for the year. That will take its toll somewhere down the line."
