UA preps for native son
The fact that Earl Bennett was recruited out of Birmingham, Ala., by Vanderbilt University was of little concern to Alabama football fans at the time it happened.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior was recruited lightly by Southeastern Conference standards, and his scholarship offers weren't exactly a who's who list.
But just about any school in the country would be glad to have the former West End High standout now.
Alabama faces Bennett and the Commodores Saturday in Nashville in the SEC opener for both schools. The game will be broadcast by Lincoln-Financial Sports at 11:30 a.m., and while thousands of Alabama fans will be tuned in to the action, a few more will be tuned in just as much to watch Bennett.
The Richmond Spiders watched Bennett make play after play last week. He totaled 223 yards on 13 receptions and was named SEC Player of the Week.
