Wright talks Gator decision
Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas safety Major Wright had a tough decision to make after four official visits to Ohio State, Florida, Miami and Notre Dame. On Tuesday, he made his choice known and adds to an already impressive Florida class.
"It came down to a lot of things," said the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder of his commitment to Florida. "Florida is a great institution, a great place with a great environment and coaches and it's very similar to my high school. It came down to those factors."
Wright chose the Gators over Ohio State in the end.
"It just came down to a gut check," he said. "I went with my gut feeling."
Wright had former college and NFL great Chris Carter helping him with the recruiting process. Carter is an Ohio State alum, but never pushed his school.
"He just helped me through it a bit, he didn't push me anywhere. He said that I have to be comfortable because I have to live wherever I go for four years so he was cool. My coach (George Smith) was also very supportive. There were times when I just wanted to commit to get it over with because it was crazy. He just kept me focused and never pushed."
Wright was recruited by Doc Holliday for the Gators.
"Being recruited by Doc was great, he's a great coach and person," said Wright. "It also helps he'll be my position coach at Florida as well."
Wright could be wearing Reggie Nelson's No. 1 jersey next season.
"I'll probably get that number," he said. "Getting to follow a great player like Reggie is an honor."
Wright could be a big part of Florida finishing No. 1 in recruiting this year.
"The young players they're getting was a big factor in my decision," he said. "Everyone wants to play with other top players."
Could fellow South Florida stud Deonte Thompson be next?
"I'm not sure what Deonte is going to do, that's the hard work he's doing now," he said. "I'd love for him to come to Florida but I'm not pressuring him."
