One school, four prospects
After missing the playoffs last season, Dulles High School near Houston turned it around in 2006, winning their district with the help of several Division I prospects.
Defensive back Troy Woolfolk was the first to commit to Michigan and followed up his verbal with superb play. The 6-0 defensive back excelled at safety, picking off six passes.
"Moving Troy to free safety made all the difference," Dulles coach Jim Creech said. "No one could break the long one on us because of his speed and he really helped us on defense with his physical play. I really believe he's a safety."
Next to commit was Jonathan Thomas, a bullish fullback with good hands.
"Jonathan was being pursued by TCU, but the coaches at Louisiana-Lafayette really showed him that they really wanted him," Creech said. "He made a great move and committed to them."
The most coveted Viking is Brandon Herron, who is also showing significant interest in Michigan. Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma State are still in the ballgame, but the Wolverines and Cornhuskers are the favorites.
"We put Brandon back on the edge and let him rush the quarterback," Creech said. "He was nicked up with a hamstring but is starting to peak for us."
The enigma at Dulles is quarterback Cotton Turner, the city of Houston's top passer. Turner (6-2, 200-pounds) has thrown for 2,850 yards and 31 touchdowns this season.
Turner was being flirted with by Tulane before signing a quarterback. Most recently, Mississippi State is thouroughly evaluating Turner for a scholarship offer.
"They came in and watched tape and eye-balled him," Creech said. "They really like him.
"Cotton is a tremendous quarterback in a passing system," he said. "He doesn't make mistakes and can run an offense better than anyone around here."
Turner is making stars of receivers Trey Parker and junior Darryl Stonum. Parker is a a senior who has caught 48 balls for 966 yards, while Stonum has tallied 1,029 yards on 47 attempts.
"Stonum is a talented I've seen as a receiver," Creech said. "He will have several offers early in the spring. He combines everything you want in a receiver."
To continue the magical season, Dulles will need to trip up Pearland and Fozzy Whitaker.
