The Bulldogs received some good injury news before practice Thursday afternoon when senior center Nick Jones returned to the practice field. Right now, the coaches think Jones will be able to start and he alternated with redshirt freshman Ian Smith taking snaps with the first string offensive line.
"We get a chance to see Nick Jones today and it will be interesting to see how he does," said head coach Mark Richt before practice Thursday. "I do not think anything will happen today to set him back."
If Jones MCL flares up after practice then the coaches will start Smith Saturday and use Jones as an emergency center Saturday.
"If he is really hobbling we will not do it (start Jones), but he says he is getting better everyday," said Richt. "I talked to him a little while ago at character education and he says he is definitely going today and he thinks he will be ready by Saturday, so that is good news."
Getting Stafford Ready
Georgia is making their fourth starting quarterback change of the season when freshman Matthew Stafford steps under center Saturday. Stafford has passed for 582 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions this season in seven games.
"As a true freshman he has made a lot of progress because most of them redshirt," said Richt of Stafford. "Most of the guys I have ever had have redshirted and not had a chance to play. When you play you progress there is no question about it, the more you play the better you get at doing things and some things you have to get under your belt so to speak and he is getting an awful lot of things that none of the those other guys ever had the opportunity to do."
Coach Richt thinks that Stafford's playing experience this season will help Georgia next year.
"It will be like night and day and he will be much more ready next season than he was at the beginning of this season," said Richt.
It is unlikely another quarterback will play Saturday and coach Richt seems reluctant to rotate quarterbacks this weekend.
"I have not thought about any plan in that regard and I just want to get Stafford in there and let him start playing and we will play everything by ear, but I do not think there will be any guarantee of anyone else playing," said Richt of rotating a second quarterback in the game. "I am not saying anyone else will not play."
If the bring any quarterbacks off the bench senior Joe Tereshinski will get the first look.
Bryant to start Saturday
Despite a reoccurring groin injury, junior wide receiver A.J. Bryant will start at flanker Saturday. Bryant returned to practice Thursday after missing practice.
"We will get a taste of A.J. today, but Ron Courson thinks he will be fine," said Richt before practice.
Sophomore Kenneth Harris and junior Mikey Henderson will backup Bryant.
Redshirt freshman Mike Moore is battling a flare up of a previous PCL injury, but he is expected to play Saturday.
"Mike had an old PCL injury that he thinks just flared up a little bit and it swelled a little bit after practice enough to get an X-ray or whatever you have to do decide if there are some cartilage and there was not," said Richt. "He really does not think it is anything serious, but when it swells something is going on."
Ramarcus Brown out for Mississippi State
Redshirt sophomore Ramarcus Brown will not play Saturday due to a hamstring injury. Brown has not been able to practice since Monday.
Redshirt freshman Bryan Evans is the likely candidate to start at the wide cornerback position, but defensive coordinator Willie Martinez is leaving the position open until Friday.
"Willie is leaving it wide open right now," said Richt. "Monday or Tuesday he said that he just wants to watch these guys and try to decide and sometimes it comes down to how we test these guys and I know at times even with the quarterback situations on who will be number two I have looked at a test to see which guy knows what or how serious a guy had taken it and it could in to that too."
Freshmen Asher Allen and Prince Miller are in the mix to start at the wide corner spot.
"Ron (Courson) seems pretty confident that Ramarcus can go next week," said Richt.
Injury Report
Junior guard Chester Adams (ankle) and senior tight end Martrez Milner (turf toe) missed practice all week, but they are expected to play next week against Florida.
Richt hopeful for 2007 OL
Before practice Thursday coach Richt was asked if he was worried about the 2007 offensive line.
"We have got some guys coming in and recruiting is not over and we have a few more hopefuls out there," said Richt of the situation.
Georgia will return 10 offensive linemen, but only five players with significant game experience.
Other Notes and Quotes
