What's the plan for Jones?
When Duke opened spring practice back in March, the Blue Devils knew they would be a little thin at the quarterback position. Sophomores Zack Asack and Marcus Jones were the only two scholarship quarterbacks to go through spring drills and the arrival of Thaddeus Lewis was still a few weeks away.
A position that was a little thin became perilously thin when Asack was suspended from the university for plagiarism, leaving Jones and Lewis as the only two realistic options at quarterback on the roster.
While Lewis shined in his starting debut last week at Wake Forest and currently has a firm grip on the starting job, a bit of a negative consequence of that is Jones seemingly has no way to get meaningful time on the field.
A program trying to build from the ground up needs its best athletes contributing somewhere, something that Duke coach Ted Roof knows very well.
He said Wednesday the staff is considering working Jones into the mix at wide receiver on a limited basis for just that very reason. However, he also understands there are risks to taking that action.
