Spain forced to learn new position on the fly
When Tyrell Spain was approached last week by Nebraska coaches about moving to the defensive side of the field to help address concerns created by the season-ending knee injury to cornerback Zackary Bowman, the junior wide receiver said he would welcome the challenge of playing a new position.
"It was something that was needed for the team," Spain said Monday.
"With the injury to Zack, it just worked out that is was the best thing for the team. That's the main goal here and I'm always a team player."
Spain is one of several players Nebraska coaches are looking at as they try to fill the shoes of Bowman, a senior who was receiving preseason all-conference accolades prior to his Aug. 5 injury.
While the loss of Bowman is a major blow to the Nebraska defense, it's also created an opportunity for Spain, who was expected to be in a crowded battle for playing time as a member of a receiving corps stocked with talented veterans and newcomers.
