Five Q's with Aaron Ross
Although he's started games in each of the past two seasons and been a major contributor on back-to-back Rose Bowl teams, senior cornerback Aaron Ross doesn't get a ton if love from the national media. Orangebloods.com talked to him on Monday afternoon about his expectations for himself and the rest of the secondary in 2006.
Q: Everyone talks about the depth issues at defensive back. What would happen if the three returning players to the secondary all sprained an ankle or something? Who would be the players in the line-up and do you think they could come in and not miss a beat?
A: (Laughing) Let's knock on wood that that doesn't happen. I think Coach Akina would get those guys ready at any time. Any time that I go down, Brandon Foster will come in. If (Tarell Brown) goes down, Ryan Palmer will come in and if you blink your eyes, you'd think we're out there. They are just as confident as we are. They know the plays and they wouldn't be here if the physical ability wasn't good enough. Yeah, I think they can step in and play.
Q: What's the scouting report on those players for those that haven't seen much of them?
A: Brandon (Foster) and (Ryan) Palmer are speed guys. They have crazy bursts of speed. Both of them jump well, they are smart in the film room and they play with confidence and aggression. They are great athletes. Erick Jackson, Gatewood and Matt Melton are very physical at safety. They'll come down and smack you in the mouth. Once again, with Coach Akina you have to be smart in the film room and know the plays. If any of us was to go down, I feel very confident that they will step in and do the job.
