Spurrier pleased with academic performance
Steve Spurrier gave the South Carolina football players a choice this past semester — go to class or run the stadium steps at 5 a.m.
Most players elected to go to class.
Spurrier's mandatory class policy paid off handsomely Tuesday when it was announced by the university that the football team had compiled a team GPA of 2.596. It is believed to be the highest semester team GPA for the football team in school history.
Spurrier, obviously, was pleased with the academic performance of his team.
"We're certainly proud of our guys," Spurrier told a group of reporters prior to the start Tuesday's meeting of the York County Gamecock Club meeting at the Baxter Conference Center. "Somebody asked me what the reason was (for the strong academic performance) and I said it was probably because we instituted a mandatory attendance policy for possibly the first time in the history of South Carolina."
