Wood answers Izzo's challenge
EAST LANSING - Brandon Wood looked overwhelmed on both ends of the floor when Michigan State lost by a point to rival Michigan in Ann Arbor on January 17.
Wood scored just four points in the first meeting on 1-of-6 shooting. But it was the leaky defense played by the transfer from Valpo, and a number of his teammates that drew the ire of Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.
Wood gained a measure of redemption in the rematch against Michigan on Sunday. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound former All-Horizon League guard scored nine points in Michigan State's 64-54 victory over Michigan. But it was the improvement that Wood showed on defense that brought a smile to his coach's face.
"He probably did as a good a job as he has done guarding people," said Izzo. "Our defense and our rebounding, which is the staple of every great program is what kept us in this game."
