McWilliams adds fifth SEC offer
Rico McWilliams picked up his 17th scholarship offer on Memorial Day.
One would think the acquisition of new suitors is becoming old hat for the 6-foot, 170-pound athlete from Hampton (Lovejoy), Ga.
One would be wrong.
"I still get excited," McWilliams said. "I've always dreamed of getting the offers. Now I just celebrate."
Ole Miss became offer No. 17 on Monday. The Rebels scouted McWilliams last week during the spring evaluation period.
"They came down to my practice," McWilliams said. "I saw them then, but I can't really talk to them. But I like Ole Miss and the SEC.
I see myself playing in the SEC. I grew up dreaming of playing in the SEC. I'm not knocking other schools, but the SEC has an advantage."
In addition to the new offer from Ole Miss, McWilliams has offers from fellow SEC schools Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Ironically, a lot of what McWilliams knows about Ole Miss comes from watching the Rebels play on television against the school he grew up cheering for, LSU.
"I'm not going to say I know a lot, but I've watched them play against LSU," McWilliams said. "I know about Dexter McCluster and I know they had 'The Blide Side' guy (Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Michael Oher), but I don't know a lot. Obviously, I'm going to have to do some research."
McWilliams said that while he's not planning to do many _ if any _ camps this summer, he does plan on "going to go see some schools with my mom and my dad."
His decision, he said, will come down to the relationship he builds with coaching staffs and the plans those staffs for him at the next level.
"I love cornerback," McWilliams said. "Almost every school asks me where I want to play and I love cornerback. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to touch the ball. I'd love to have some plays designed for me to get the ball.
"I have to look outside football, too. I want to see if it's a winning program and I want to see if I can help the program out."
McWilliams said he's in no hurry to make a decision.
"I don't know what I'm going to do right now," McWilliams said. "I'm still liking every school right now."
