Tide offers in-state back
Florence (AL) running back Beniquez Brown picked up his second scholarship offer in two days on Tuesday with both offers coming from recent national championship-winning programs. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound back followed up a recent offer from Auburn by picking up an offer from the Alabama Crimson Tide.
"I received my offer from Auburn on Monday and then an offer from Alabama on Tuesday," Brown said. "It has been a pretty big couple of days. My whole life I have dreamed of playing big time college football and now that dream is looking like it could come true so I'm extremely happy. I know I need to stay focused on working hard in the classroom and doing the right things and everything should fall into place for me from there."
"Alabama has actually been interested in me for a while, probably before anybody else. I went to a camp there the summer before my sophomore year and then they invited me to come see some games that fall. Then this past season Alabama and Auburn both invited me to games so I've seen both campuses a few times."
Brown has been one of the state's top backs since his sophomore year but expanded his resume during his junior year to include linebacker as well. Stepping in for an injured teammate, Brown quickly established himself as a legitimate defensive star.
"My sophomore year I was pretty much a running back only. I had 17 touchdowns and I put up some pretty good yardage too but I didn't play on defense at all. Then this past season we had one of our starting middle linebackers go down and I had to step in and play that position full time too. I ended up with 134 tackles on defense and still put up 1,110 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense too so I was really happy that I was able to perform well on both sides of the ball."
"I know Auburn likes me as a running back but I haven't really talked much to Alabama about what kind of role they see me playing. I will probably find out when I go to their Junior Day on the 19th but I really don't have a preference. I would be happy to play linebacker if it meant I could get on the field faster and contribute sooner."
With 4.5 speed and impressive upper and lower body strength, Brown sees himself as a good fit for a power run game but believes he has the versatility to play in a number of different offensive styles effectively.
"I think when I see Alabama's style on offense, it's a pretty good fit for me as a running back. I'm a bigger guy so I like to play physical but I also try to be explosive and try to get away from tacklers instead of always running through them. I try to hit the hole hard and then breakaway with my speed. I think I see a lot of that with Alabama's backs too."
Brown has a busy spring ahead but plans on taking a number of visits to both Alabama, Auburn and a few other schools that are showing him early interest.
"I have been hearing from a few other schools too that I will probably try to visit this spring. Nebraska, Missouri, Mississippi State and Ole Miss are all talking to me. I"m also playing basketball and when that ends, I'm going right into baseball. My coaches understand that football is what I want to do long term so they are going to be very flexible with me and let me take visits when I need to."
