Bulldogs name four captains on Tuesday
Last season Mississippi State waited until just before the final game of the year to name its captains.
But the Bulldogs have taken a different approach this fall naming four captains on Tuesday in senior K.J. Wright, Chris White, Pernell McPhee and Derek Sherrod.
"In the second year of the program it's a lot easier to name captains because they understand what the leadership is about, what our players are expected to do and what we are looking for in the team," said MSU head coach Dan Mullen. "We are really excited about having those four guys being the captains of our football team."
One of those captains Mullen has been pleased with in the offseason through fall camp is Wright. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound linebacker has taken on more of a leadership role and helped fill the void left by the departed Jamar Chaney on defense.
"He's really taken on that leadership role," Mullen said of Wright. "It's not that he didn't do it last year he just didn't have to do it as much last year. He just stepped in very naturally and had a feel for that position. Being voted as a captain by his teammates is a great honor and shows what the players think of him."
The Bulldogs continue their game week preparations for the season opener on Saturday against Memphis. Mullen released his depth chart on Monday morning and will likely stick to that for the most part against the Tigers.
