For freshman Elam, smaller is better
Safety Matt Elam, a touted five-star recruit who early enrolled at Florida in January, arguably was the Gators' most impressive true freshman during spring practice. In fact, he performed so well coaches said he had already earned the right to play this fall.
Despite that, the truth is Elam wasn't even at his best.
He knew it. And more importantly, Florida head coach Urban Meyer knew it.
Earlier this week, Meyer said the 5-foot-10 Elam was a bit on the "chubby" side this spring, when Elam bulked up, or rather filled out, to 218 pounds.
"When I first got here, I gained weight fast," Elam said. "I was eating too much and I filled out."
