Scherff focused on winning state
With his rival Drew Clark graduating and moving on to Iowa, Brandon Scherff has been absolutely dominant in the shot put this season with several feet between him and his nearest competitor. Right now, Scherff's main focus is on winning a state title in the event, but after that it is on to Iowa City for summer workouts. The future Hawkeye offensive lineman talks about his upcoming freshman year and much more.
Q: What's been the difference for you this spring because you have really improved in the shot put?
SCHERFF: Yeah, it's been going really well. I finally got over the 60 hump. I think one of the big reasons is because I changed to a full spin and that gives you a little more momentum and little more speed around the circle. I've been lifting four times a week and I think that's helped a lot too.
Q: What was it like winning at the Drake Relays?
SCHERFF: Well, it wasn't the greatest conditions, but I thought I threw pretty well.
Q: What's your best on the season and what's the goal going forward?
SCHERFF: I've gone 63-8. I want to get 65.
Q: Before this year, your biggest competition was Drew Clark, your future teammate, right?
SCHERFF: Yeah, it's kind of been me and him the last couple years. I beat him at state my sophomore year and then I got second to him last year and Brett Van Sloten got third.
Q: Have you been mixing in the Iowa workouts with track practice this spring?
SCHERFF: Yeah, I go to practice right after school and then right after practice I lift.
