Michigan TE is one to watch
One of the top performers this past weekend at the MichiganPreps.com Combine was tight end/defensive end prospect Jake Duzey of Troy Athens High School. The 6-foot-4, 219-pound prospect already has multiple scholarship offers and Michigan State is taking a very close look. SpartanMag.com has the latest on his recruitment.
Duzey performance at the combine was impressive in all aspects. He clocked a forty-time of 4.49 seconds, ran the shuttle in 4.28 seconds and had a 33-inch vertical jump. Those results put him in rare company among the 600+ athletes that attended the event. Despite those impressive numbers, Duzey was not completely satisfied.
"I thought I did well, but I think I could have done a little better," he said.
SpartanMag.com asked Duzey about his recruitment.
"Things are going well, he said. I have offers from Central Michigan and Western Michigan. I am also hearing from Michigan State and Northwestern a lot."
We asked Duzey what his feeling about Michigan State are, and if he has been up there often?
"I have a lot of interest in Michigan State," he said. I went up for a game last fall and I also went to a bowl practice. I think I am going to go up there for a practice and the spring game."
Duzey's primary recruiter for Michigan State is Tight End Coach Mark Staten. It never hurts when a position coach also serves as the primary recruiter. However, tight end is not the only position the Spartans are looking at Duzey for. He informed us that they have also talked about the possibility of defensive end.
"It doesn't matter to me what position. I like tight end the most, but I would not mind defensive end at all," Duzey stated.
Duzey is not only a fine football player, but he also plays basketball for Troy Athens High School. Duzey is also a solid student in the classroom and the educational opportunities a school offers is something he is looking close at.
"I am thinking I would like to student something in the medical field or possibly education," Duzey stated.
Duzey's performance on Sunday should only serve to increase his recruiting stock. Central Michigan was the first school to offer Duzey and a lot of that had to do with Coach Enos being well aware of Duzey due to Troy being part of his recruiting area while at Michigan State. Coach Enos wasted little time offering Duzey a scholarship after being named the head coach at Central Michigan.
Duzey size and style of play are very similar to current Spartan tight end Brian Linthicum. Both players came out of high school at similar size and are known for being athletic pass catchers that can stretch the field. If Duzey is offered and ends up at Michigan State, he could assume Linthicum role after a red-shirt season.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to follow Duzey recruitment over the coming months. Don't be surprised if his offer list expands significantly over the coming months.
