Zeller enjoys Iowa visit
After watching his older brothers go through the recruiting process, Cody Zeller is starting down a familiar road for his family by taking unofficial campus visits during the fall. With several family members living in the state of Iowa, the Zeller's traveled to Iowa City last weekend to take a closer look at the Iowa Basketball program and to take in the Iowa/Michigan football game.
Cody Zeller remembers visiting Iowa City about six years ago when his oldest brother, Luke, was on a campus visit.
"I remember being there with Luke, but I was pretty young. The basketball arena was bigger than what I remembered," he said. "My parents loved the visit. Anytime they can find an excuse to get back and see family in Iowa, they are going to take it."
Their day started at Carver-Hawkeye Arena with a meeting with Coach Lickliter and Assistant Coach LaVall Jordan.
"The coaches at Iowa are great people and it is always good to see them," Zeller said. "We talked for a while about how I would fit in to their program and how they would use me on the team."
There is a long term relationship between the Zeller family and Coach Todd Lickilter. When Luke Zeller was being recruited, Butler was among his final five schools and Lickliter also offered Tyler Zeller a scholarship.
"Coach Lickliter is a great guy and a great coach," Zeller said. "He is the same guy that we first met many years ago and treats everyone the same. His players really seem to like him and he always gets his players to play hard, which is important to me."
After the visit to the arena, the 6-foot-9 and 195 pound four star prospect, who is rated by Rivals.com as the 35th best prospect in the Class of 2011, headed over with his father to sold out Kinnick Stadium to watch the Hawkeyes defeat Michigan.
"It was a great football game and I really thought that the fans were great. Iowa has a great fanbase that supports the team."
In addition to holding a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes, Zeller has offers from Butler, Indiana, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Purdue. His older brothers also held offers from the Hawkeyes, but they never seemed to get serious consideration. Do they have a shot this time around?
"Definitely," Zeller said." I want to take these types of visits to narrow things down and Iowa is definitely in there for me."
Zeller was also quick to point out that any college decision is still probably at least a year away. He did indicate that schedule permitting; he would like to make it back to Iowa City this winter for a basketball game.
Next up for the talented forward is a trip this weekend to see his brother Tyler at North Carolina for their Midnight Madness on Friday night. Next weekend he is slated to visit Michigan and he said he spent some time on the Indiana campus this past week.
